[ xie lian doesn't really seem all that ruffled by being called names. he's pouring a cup of tea for tsukasa-- this time, a fujian baroque--and it's a miracle that he doesn't overpour the entire thing as he's dumping information on him.
it's a lead. in a way, inadvertently, xie lian may have placed a spy in the coffee shop without even trying to. if that's what made them nervous--a genuine misstep--he can't say he's complaining. as tsukasa continues to tell his story, xie lian focuses on the preparation of the tea, his mouth briefly twitching up at i tried using being a nice policeman and your name as leverage. bad move on both parts...
eventually, with a sympathetic noise to his house, he finishes, pours his own cup, and settles back down in his desk chair. ] ...Thank you for sharing all of this with me, Tsukasa. I'm eternally grateful. You've done me a great favor here, with excellent police work. I do know of Kangai, he's no member of Xian Le, but he was seeking sanctuary from the Mori at the beginning of the month, so I offered him a job. Incompetently, I suppose.
[ he doesn't quite laugh, but theres a little twinkle to his eyes that suggests that that's kind of funny. his mother and her fortunes would've thought this was a very appropriate ominous star move. using his bad luck to his (?) advantage! ] You using my name might have tipped them off, but hopefully, not so, if they're so confident in their read of me. I'll continue to play incompetent if that's what they think I am. For now, I'd recommend staying away from that area to avoid any more violent retaliation...though I'm sure I don't have to tell you that twice. I'll keep an eye on who works there and their schedules. There may be a connection between these people and another issue in Xian Le, if I'm not mistaken, and I'd like to eliminate both if at all possible.
[ by which he means he's going to eliminate both, positively. this is a chance to cut down on some corruption, and to show some strength, like baren had mentioned back at the beginning of all of this.
the final part of tsukasa's statement deserves addressing, too, and as xie lian lifts his cup to his lips, he feels a sense of utter fondness for this policeman. really... the police have an honest job, and the two that they have in montevallo are doing their best. it's something xie lian respects. ] Tsukasa. You're a policeman as much as anyone else, and you've taken on the job in a difficult place, at a difficult time. You're young, but that doesn't mean you aren't worthy of your title, or your job. There's no reason for a dedicated, honest, and hardworking policeman to feel any sort of nerves confronting anyone at all, because in the end, all of us are, in some way, criminals. You're doing your job. Go to your meeting, and meet with the head of Mori, too.
[ that time he smiles, with a little huff of a laugh. ] You should be confident in yourself. You've earned it.
[ there's probably no point to having police in montevallo just like there's no point to having a mayor. it's something tsukasa's mulled over from time to time, both at home and while he's out on the streets, but he took to the job because he wanted to bring justice to victims and their family - he took to it because it was the right thing to do.
maybe he would've had just as much success, or even more success, having gone into a family business proper so to speak, no matter what that might've said about his parents or his uncle. maybe it would've been easier to seek revenge or find out what he wanted to know, but... maybe it wouldn't have helped at all, either, and he would've just wound up being used for something he didn't want to be. maybe he still is, admittedly - for a police in a town full of mafia, he knows he's still too trusting, and he knows a lot of people would agree with that. it's foolish. it's stupid. it's thinking people are a lot better than they actually are, but if he can't believe in that, there's no point in trying to help others.
all of that is to say:
he appreciates xie lian's words more than the mafia head could ever realize. tsukasa's lips curl involuntarily at the ends, his fingers rubbing the side of his cup idly. ]
Thank you. [ very softly said, his gaze dropping to the tea for a moment before he lifts it again. ] Don't worry. I'll mind my own business, at least in that area... There's a few other things that concern me that I should be looking into anyway, too.
[ he pauses, humming shortly, and continues: ]
What's the other issue in Xian Le, if you don't mind my asking? I'd like to at least keep abreast of any situations, um. If that's alright, Xie Lian.
[ boy too bad we know how well this coffee shop thing turns out! (:
anyway. xie lian watches tsukasa with a hint of fondness. in this policeman, he sees a hint of himself, which has earned his respect in more ways than one. taking a sip of his tea, xie lian takes the moment to savor the flavor and prepare his response. ]
There've been a slew of kidnappings in Middleton, as I'm sure you know. Someone is acting against my orders with the aim to take restore the monetary status of Xian Le. [ he doesn't seem particularly heartbroken or wrecked by this information. at this point it's sort of fact. ] They're dissatisfied with my lead, and have been since my parents died. In short, there's a something of a coup in the works. I'm not the type of leader I think some thought I would become.
[ xie lian pauses, looking down at his cup; his expression hardens briefly. ] I won't be influenced by that sort of behavior, and make no mistake, I have no intentions of giving up my seat, my family, or my morals. I intend to see the threat wiped out, and the wrongdoers punished, if it's the last thing I do.
[ ah, so it's the xian le... rather, people in it. tsukasa sips his tea slowly in consideration, his forehead creasing, and he sets his cup down. ]
You have my support... I think that goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Whatever way I can help, I will. [ or he'll try. sometimes, that's all one can do. ] And... I'll make sure that what happened to your parents won't happen to you either, Xie Lian, no matter what it takes.
[ even if it costs his life... he's a small fry compared to mafia heads. shishimaru can handle things, too. ]
