Personality: Xie Lian is well described by his title: the "Flower Crowned Martial God". His kind and gentle nature give him his "flower crown", but his "martial god" status ties into his fighty personality. Xie Lian has been a prince, a god, and a nobody--multiple times each. In his 800 years of life he moves from a spoiled, proud and headstrong prince to a humble garbage collecting god, and is now known for his tremendously bad luck. Xie Lian has been pushed to his breaking point by life enough that he doesn't care what anyone thinks about him no matter what, even if it's being the laughingstock of the heavens. He's determined in all that he does, and Xie Lian is always trying to do good. He always tries.

Xie Lian sees the best in people, but he has a bullshit tolerance level that can be surpassed. He's often blunt, stubborn, and though he's very clever, he's emotionally stupid. Xie Lian also tends to get flustered easily (his cultivation depends on abstinence: he's an 800 year old virgin). His kind personality is hard earned: through a lifelong struggle of tragedies he caused--including the destruction of his kingdom and family--and the torment of a mysterious being called the "White No Face" who exists to make his life hell.

But, Xie Lian overcame it. He is truly a character defined by his growth: his emotional, mental and physical fortitude were hard earned. After losing everything, he's still kind--he's absolutely earned his flower crown.



Motivations: More than anything, Xie Lian wants to help the common people. That's been his motive since he first ascended (as a strange but beloved prince), and even after 800 years worth of tragedy, it remains the same. One person's random kindness is what restored Xie Lian's faith in humanity when it was lost, and he's always done his best to return that favor in kind. It doesn't matter who that person is, or what sort of crime they've committed, even if it was one directly to Xie Lian: he doesn't hold grudges even if he remembers, and still tries his best to do what's right, no matter what the cost is.

Less important but still noticeable, Xie Lian is also motivated by his own utter stubbornness. He has never taken "no" very well. He wants to find his own answers to questions and often does ridiculous things and puts himself in danger in the process of doing so.

I gotta mark all of his abiities with the "☆" because Xie Lian is in fact, a god, and therefore needs to be hella nerfed. Everything is OP. Luckily, he comes with a canon nerf, so I'd like him to maintain his cursed shackle (ankle/neck) that makes it so he has no spiritual power of his own.

HOWEVER, that still leaves the immortality, the super strength, the agility.... I think I'd like to leave his fighting skills alone (I can adjust them to AU purposes, ofc) and the pain tolerance/intelligence because they were very much earned and not so much gifted as a god, but.... ??? I leave it up to you!

FRAGMENT #1

☆ SO DESCENDING IS TOTALLY COOL, RIGHT? THAT'S ALLOWED? ☆

After the beloved prince of Xian Le ascended, his people worshipped him ferverently, enough that he became powerful in a small amount of time. Still, Xie Lian was so concerned with the people of Xian Le that he stuck his nose a little too far into their business.

The neighboring kingdom of Yongan began to experience a terrible drought, and Xie Lian strove to help them, running water across the plains using a gift from the Rain Master, a straw hat. At the same time, a terrible disease began to appear in Xian Le--the "Human Face Plague". Highly contagious and horrifying, Xie Lian sought out the cure to this disease, and only heard it from [ REDACTED ].

The cure was even worse than the disease, and Xie Lian refused to give it. The people of Xian Le began to suffer, and Xie Lian turned his attention away from Yongan to focus on Xian Le... which led to a war...which led to a lot of unnecessary death. Xie Lian refused to stand for this and watch, so he descended and communicated with the mortal realm. Xie Lian began trying to Solve The Problems, and the people believed he could solve all of them! He could, for a while, but things got more and more and more out of hand... which eventually led to Xie Lian quite literally holding up the world with a statue as a riot raged on around him. All of his efforts failed: the statue fell, Xie Lian broke his leg in the massive fall, the Human Face Plague became catastrophic, the rebels took over, Xian Le was destroyed...and just to add insult to injury, the beloved crown prince, now despised by his people, was kicked out of heaven and returned to the mortal world.

☆ THE SPIRITUAL DEVICE: RUOYE'S HANGING AROUND ☆

A long band of silk. Ruoye is a spiritual device, born of a great tragedy. It is a part of Xie Lian, and has a sense of conscious: it can respond to commands, and has quite the personality of its own. It dislikes causing great harm but is fully capable of doing so, if Xie Lian asks.

The silk band can stretch VERY far--there's no limit, as far as we know--though it can be stopped by any sort of barrier. It moves very quickly and can be used for anything from a grappling hook to "grabbing onto something sturdy" (read: hua cheng) to breaking the necks of enemies.

Xie Lian has Ruoye for a very specific reason, but on achieving his second fragment, he won't know why... he'll just be very happy to see it.

FRAGMENT #3

☆ THE FIRST BANISHMENT: XIE LIAN GOES ON A BENDER ☆

Xie Lian's life goes to shit after the fall of Xian Le. In this time he:
- lives on the run
- Loses his only two friends
- Is bullied more or less by a bunch of heavenly officials bein assholes (and his friend)
- Has to street perform, busk, and basically do everything possible to try and make money including, at one point, stealing
- Stomachs some pretty garbage fucking food because they're spoiled royals who don't know how to do shit, his mom's cooking included

- Loses his sense of self
- Runs away from home
- Gets fuckin WASTED in a graveyard and swears for the first real time (lol)
- See visions of himself humiliated (kneeling statues of Xian Le you're supposed to step on)
- Parents commit suicide
- He tries to commit suicide but is still functionally immortal so he can't (and thus, the memory about ruoye)
- The Human Face Plague comes back!!
- Xie Lian has the worst encounter of his life. The way to gain immunity to human face plague is to kill someone. Xie Lian is trapped in a temple with a bunch of villagers, and the human face plague appears on them and begins to spread. They discuss what to do and [ REDACTED ] points out that if they stab Xie Lian, he won't die, but the killing blow should protect them.

Xie Lian is stabbed so many times he's reduced to an unrecognizable lump of flesh on the altar of his own temple.

It's a great time!

FRAGMENT #4

☆ SECOND ASCENSION & BANISHMENT: XIE LIAN FAILS AT FAILURE. ☆

Having lost all faith in humanity, Xie Lian dons a mask: half smiling, half crying. He proceeds to take vengeance on the people of Yongan, accompanied only by the spirits of the destroyed soldiers, and a youth clothed in all black who bends the knee and swears to die following Xie Lian. (Xie Lian, in a moment of "my life is garbage" coolness reminds him he's already dead.)

After committing a less than satisfying act of vengeance--the person who deserved it died a less than exciting death, pathetically--Xie Lian is left with a sword full of screaming vengeful spirits and an ultimatum. If he doesn't commit total revenge on Yongan and use the spirits to unleash the Human Face Plague on the now surviving and thriving population of Yongan, then Xie Lian will be the one cursed--meaning he will be more or less wiped from existence.

Xie Lian has three days to complete this task. He could avenge the people of Xian Le. Instead of doing it immediately, he chooses to stab himself in the stomach with the sword and lays in a crater in the middle of Yongan, deciding that if anyone comes to help him, it will prove that humanity is worth saving. At this point, he's lost all of his princely idealism and kindness; his dreams were killed by life, and it seems like humanity will prove nothing. The plague, despite all of his hesitance, will be unleashed by the hatred in him.

But, at sundown on the last day, an unknown farmer gives Xie Lian his hat to shield him from the sun.

This is enough. Xie Lian gets one person, and he decides it's enough. However, something releases the plague anyway, and Xie Lian scrambles to stop it, even offering himself up to be stabbed again and again and again by the people of Yongan like he had last time. The people, unlike the first time, refuse, and Xie Lian is ready to take on the vengeful spirits fury himself. He starts to, but he's stopped before they can destroy him.

The black clothed youth Wuming turns the tide, and takes all of the vengeful spirits on himself. His final act of sacrifice causes him to scream the most painful sound Xie Lian has ever heard--and then, he's gone, leaving behind only a small white flower, and the sword itself.

Somehow in this time, Xie Lian ascended again. But, he asked Jun Wu, the emperor of heaven, to banish him again, for unleashing the human face plague. So, in the span of approximately thirty minutes, Xie Lian is ascended, and then banished again: this time, both his spiritual powers are locked up and he disperses his luck to the rest of the world, leaving himself as truly the god of misfortune.

FRAGMENT #5

☆ THIS MOTHERFUCKER: THE WHITE NO FACE ☆

All of these memories have been missing one key thing. Each time something bad happened in Xie Lian's life, be it the spread of the Human Face Plague, the destruction of Xian Le, the stabbings at the altar, or even the unleashing of the plague round 2, there was one person behind it.

Xie Lian's final fragment will be the memory of the "White No Face" (the Bai Wuxiang), a demonic calamity wearing a half smiling, half crying mask. It claims to be "educating" Xie Lian, and is a ridiculously strong ghostly entity. The White No Face has pursued Xie Lian for almost his entire life, and it showed no sign of stopping its torment, leading eventually to the confrontation at the end of his second ascension. Supposedly "killing" the White No Face is what allowed him to ascend again.

Finally, at the end of his despair, Xie Lian will finally get to learn that he hasn't actually been the sole cause of his own destruction. (: (:
